Malvern Collegiate Institute Alumni Association

 I made a trip to Germany last April for a meeting in Hamburg, and the idea occurred to me that my husband and I could take the time to visit the graves of some Malvernites fallen in World War II. David Fuller, a Malvern parent who is researching the history of Malvern’s participation in both World Wars, gave me the names of four airmen who were buried in the Berlin War Cemetery along with just under 3500 others from Canada and other Commonwealth countries. 

President’s Message

A great deal has happened at Malvern since our last Musings was published in September 2010. We put out our appeal to you for donations to the Malvern C.I. War Memorial Restoration campaign, and funds started to slowly trickle in. We had planned to hold a Comedy Show in support of this campaign, but we had to cancel it because of slow ticket sales.

We hope you have all had an enjoyable summer. Now September brings the beginning of another school year. We are now launching a special campaign that will resonate with many members of the Malvern community. We are starting the school year with a comedy show to raise funds for the restoration of the Malvern War Memorial, sculpted by noted Canadian sculptor and coin designer, Emanuel Hahn.

Rod Tennyson: Malvern’s Own Rocket Scientist helps in Apollo 13
Crisis

A desperate phone call forty years ago propelled a Malvern alumnus, Rod
Tennyson (class of 1956), and his colleagues at the University of Toronto’s
Institute for Aerospace Studies into heroic status. On 16 April 1970, a cry
for help came from Grumman Aerospace, an Apollo 13 contractor. On
its way to the moon, an oxygen tank on the Apollo 13 had exploded.

President’s Report at the MRBS AGM

When I was elected in November 2007, two other new members who joined the Executive were Adele Ashby as Vice-President and Robert Watson as Member-at-Large. They have assisted us very ably with their work during what has turned out to be a very busy year. Our worries that the MRBS did not have enough person-power to sustain itself were unfounded as a renewed core group rose to carry on the society for another term.
