The following is an essay written by a Malvern student, Will Pearson. The sacrifice that soldiers make when they die for our freedom is one that can never be truly repaid. That people are willing to lay down their lives in defence of their country is something that cannot be taken for granted. Soldiers’ reasons for enlisting are likely to be as individual as each one. They might not even be fully understood by them, only that they are compelled to do so for one reason or another.

Girls and Women in Sports – Paula Warder Last 11 November was Malvern’s Commencement as well as being Remembrance Day. The guest speaker of the event was Paula Fletcher, Malvern alumna, who in 2011 was given an award at the Canadian National Exhibition – the prestigious C.N.E. Medallion for outstanding contributions to sports at the C.N.E. The Malvern Red and Black Society is always pleased when one of our own is chosen, and we thought we would share her speech with you.

 I made a trip to Germany last April for a meeting in Hamburg, and the idea occurred to me that my husband and I could take the time to visit the graves of some Malvernites fallen in World War II. David Fuller, a Malvern parent who is researching the history of Malvern’s participation in both World Wars, gave me the names of four airmen who were buried in the Berlin War Cemetery along with just under 3500 others from Canada and other Commonwealth countries. 

President’s Message A great deal has happened at Malvern since our last Musings was published in September 2010. We put out our appeal to you for donations to the Malvern C.I. War Memorial Restoration campaign, and funds started to slowly trickle in. We had planned to hold a Comedy Show in support of this campaign, but we had to cancel it because of slow ticket sales.

We hope you have all had an enjoyable summer. Now September brings the beginning of another school year. We are now launching a special campaign that will resonate with many members of the Malvern community. We are starting the school year with a comedy show to raise funds for the restoration of the Malvern War Memorial, sculpted by noted Canadian sculptor and coin designer, Emanuel Hahn.
